Little compares to getting outdoors and breathing in the fresh air, any time of the year. However, the crisp breeze that arrives in the autumn, coupled with colorful scenery, just might make fall the best for a leisurely hike. Next time you're out near Greensburg, make a detour for a leisurely trek along Twin Lakes Loop Trail near Pittsburgh. (You might want to have your camera handy, too.)
Roll down the windows and let the fresh, fall air rush through on the 45-minute drive from downtown Pittsburgh to Twin Lakes Park in Greensburg.
If you set your GPS to the park, it will list the address as being in Latrobe.
A popular destination all year around, Twin Lakes Park boasts an Upper and a Lower Lake, boat rentals, and the Vietnam Veterans of Westmoreland County Memorial.
One of the best ways to explore the picturesque park, in addition to boating, is by going on a leisurely hike. Twin Lakes Loop Trail, rated easy, meanders 2.4 miles through the park.
Even if the golden fall sun is a little too warm, you'll largely be shaded by the towering trees that line parts of the path. It can get crowded at times, so be prepared for that.
A trek along the crushed limestone trail is beautiful in any season, but you'll be in for a real treat if you visit when the fall foliage is at its richest. (Peak or near peak time is your best bet for a hike.)
If you have the time, go at your own pace. Benches dot the park, so you can take a breather or just sit back and admire the scenery.
You'll likely run into some of the residents of the park, too - ducks, geese, turtles, and frogs. You might even see a deer or two.
Cap off your visit with a picnic. If you didn't bring food, head over to the Boathouse, where you can buy food and drinks. (The Boathouse is open all year.)
