Sometime during my travels, I discovered the beauty of the quiet of nature, of spending time outdoors where the only sounds are the birds chatting, fallen branches crunching beneath my feet, and maybe a whisper of the wind as it blows through. Even though I’m admittedly not the most experienced or savvy hiker, I fell in love with hiking because of the quiet moments it promises. Whether you’re experienced or a newbie, bringing your kiddos or pups, or going solo, you might just discover the magic of hiking along this kid-friendly trail in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Hiking is one of those unique activities we can all enjoy, and the John Heinz Lake Loop Trail at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia is accessible to most adventurers. The predominately flat trail spans 3.5 miles, making it doable for kids of all ages and leashed pups. A short portion of the trail, which features both boardwalk and gravel, is also wheelchair accessible. Don’t worry if you tire easily or need to take breaks. Benches dot the path, making it easy to sit down, take a breath, and enjoy the natural scenery.

Depending on how fast you walk, you’ll only need around an hour to complete the John Heinz Lake Loop Trail, which scores an easy rating. However, you’ll likely have to deal with a few minor annoyances, including mosquitoes, especially if you’re hiking during the warmer months. Lather on the bug spray; slip on a pair of comfy shoes, and grab your water before you set off on this pretty path that circles the lake.

If you love wildlife, you’ll quickly realize this trail is akin to paradise. Keep an eye out, and you just might spot such wildlife as deer, foxes, ducks, and turtles. Observation decks make it easy to bird-watch (consider bringing binoculars and your camera). There’s a lot to see on this pretty path, so take your time and soak up the scenery – colorful wildflowers, lush greenery, and lily pads floating in the water. 

You’ll likely feel energized after your hike, so keep exploring if you have time. Over 10 miles of trails meander through this more than 1,000-acre wildlife refuge that features other such family-friendly activities as boating and fishing. Kids, as young as eight, can learn archery during events that are held throughout the year.
