Explore Thornburg Conservation Park In Pittsburgh On A Secluded, Picturesque Three-Mile Hike
Thornburg Conservation Park in Pittsburgh offers serene hiking trails and abundant wildlife in a tranquil natural setting.
Pittsburgh offers the best of life in a big city and the tranquility of nature. We can even find lush green spaces dotted throughout the city. While there are some well-known nature spots, like Beechwood Farms Nature Reserve and Pittsburgh Botanic Gardens, within easy driving distance of the city, there are also quite a few hidden gems just waiting to be discovered. Like Thornburg Conservation Park in Pittsburgh.
Stretching across 38 acres, Thornburg Conservation Park provides the perfect setting for a day of exploring nature. If you like peace and quiet, you've come to the right place.
Your best bet for exploring the natural area is to set off on the three-mile Thornburg Trail and Johnson's Trail, paths that are rated easy for hikers of all ages and skill levels.
Even though the trail has garnered an easy rating, you'll definitely want to wear comfy, sturdy shoes. Be prepared for mud, if you're hiking after wet weather.
Other than the potential for muddy conditions, the trail is predominately flat and usually quiet, except for the serene sounds of nature.
Some of the trail passes alongside a creek and railroad tracks. Wildlife is abundant in the area, and if you're lucky you might spot a bald eagle.
Wildflowers, red raspberries, and garlic mustard plants also dot the trail.
In addition to hiking, bird watching and cross-country skiing are permitted in the conservation area.
Dogs are only allowed in the conservation area if you have a permit, and they are not permitted in the area at all on Wednesdays and Sundays.
