This sprawling park near Pittsburgh provides the perfect setting for a day outdoors — any time of the year — in the fresh air. But, for a particularly unique and breathtaking experience, plan a visit during the wintertime.
A half an hour's drive from downtown Pittsburgh, Raccoon Creek State Park is a favorite summer destination for Pittsburghers. But, have you been there when it's transformed into a winter wonderland?

Glide across Raccoon Lake on ice skates on those cold winter days. The state, however, does not keep track of the thickness of the ice. Be sure that it is sturdy enough to hold your weight and the weight of those with you.
Prefer a little ice fishing instead? Ice fishing is also permitted on Raccoon Lake. Fishermen and women are encouraged to wear life jackets.
Winter provides the perfect backdrop for a leisurely hike along one of the 42 miles of trails that crisscross the park.
Embark on the Pinto Trail, a 1.1-mile trail that's popular with both hikers and cross-country skiers. Rated as easy, the trail will lead you through picturesque meadows and forest areas.
Keep an eye out for the local wildlife that call Raccoon Creek State Park home. Deer, raccoon, fox, opossums, and skunk all live within the natural wonder.
Snowmobiling's another popular activity when conditions allow. If you're up for an afternoon of snowmobiling, you'll only be able to use four miles of Pioneer Camp Road and Nichols Road.
Admire the setting sun to end your day at Raccoon Creek State Park. The park welcomes visitors daily, all year, from sunrise to sunset.
