Some days are just meant for those long, leisurely drives, where we have absolutely no destination in mind. We just let the road lead us where it may. Then there are times when we have a particular spot in mind and, as we follow the road, we realize it’s just as breathtakingly beautiful as our final destination. That’s probably what you’ll quickly discover when you journey along Bucktail Scenic Byway in Pennsylvania, one of the best scenic drives in PA.
Winding 100 miles through some of the most gorgeous natural landscapes in the Pennsylvania Wilds, Bucktail Scenic Byway will lead you from Ridgway to Lock Haven.
While you can easily follow the route in a long day, you might want to make an overnight or a weekend of it, so you can get out and explore some of the beautiful destinations along the way.
One of the highlights of this scenic drive in Pennsylvania is, undoubtedly, Sinnemahoning State Park and Wildlife Center in Austin.
Austin is also known for Hammsersley Wild Area, the most remote spot in Pennsylvania, and for Austin Dam Memorial Park. The park memorializes those who lost their lives when the dam gave way in 1911.
The scenic byway also travels along a portion of Sproul State Forest, the largest state forest in Pennsylvania. It spans more than 476 miles and is brimming with hiking trails and kayaking. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and ATV riding are all popular activities, too.
With all of the natural destinations along the way, including Elk State Forest, you could easily spend days stopping and exploring before continuing on your way. Elk State Forest offers the unique opportunity to view countless elk in their natural habitat.
You’ll also pass Renovo, the most remote town in Pennsylvania. The darling town, surrounded by lush green, is perfect for grabbing a bite to eat before continuing on your journey.
Just 27 miles from the final stop, Lock Haven, on the scenic byway, you’ll arrive at Hyner View State Park. The tiny state park – it’s just six acres – boasts some of the most sensational views in Pennsylvania.
Bring a picnic along or, if you’re a thrill seeker, go hang gliding.
The rural north of Pennsylvania is an amazing place - and this scenic byway is one of the best ways to see it.

The Bucktail Scenic Byway is a remote road - so remote, in fact, that videos of it are few and far between! But we managed to find this video of Smitty's Adventuring Days on YouTube exploring a section of the path, taken back in 2017!
