You Can Hike in Two States in One Day on This Pennsylvania Trail

You can hike right into New Jersey on this bucket-list-worthy hike through "Rocksylvania."

I've always appreciated the idea of thru-hikes like the Appalachian Trail, but I'll admit that they are also quite intimidating. Thankfully, you don't have to commit to the entire 2,000-mile route to enjoy the experience of hiking from one state to another. Here in Pennsylvania, you can take the Appalachian Trail from Fox Gap to Delaware Water Gap and enjoy a true bucket-list-worthy experience: you'll hike two states at once in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It's a long day hike, clocking in at 13 miles round-trip, but it's well worth exploring if you're up for it.

How This Pennsylvania Trail Lets You Hike in Two States in One Day

Most Pennsylvania residents have enjoyed the experience of hiking at least a portion of the Appalachian Trail, but fewer have committed to hiking two states at once in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Enter the Appalachian Trail: Fox Gap to Delaware Water Gap, a 13.2-mile trek that gives you this state-crossing experience. The adventure begins firmly in Pennsylvania, and you'll begin your adventure at the Fox Gap Trailhead in Northampton County. There's a small dedicated parking lot, but no facilities, so be sure to plan accordingly. Look for the characteristic white blazes and markers of the Appalachian Trail and begin your two-state trek! After many miles in what's affectionately known as "Rocksylvania," you'll have reached New Jersey.

Trail Overview: Distance, Difficulty, and Scenic Highlights

Curious what to expect along the way? We've got a breakdown of the details so you know what to expect. Once you've parked and stepped onto the trail, head north. This first stretch roughly follows the Kittatinny Mountain ridge and is forested. For the next two miles, the terrain stays roughly the same, gradually increasing its incline. You'll get some scenic views along the way, but it's mostly forested and shaded. The next major point of interest is the Rugged Wolf Rocks, where giant boulders create a dramatic view.

Approximately five miles after your starting point, you'll have arrived at the big moment: the stateline crossing. Look out for the National Recreation Area markers that announce your entry into New Jersey and savor the moment! If you'd like to continue into New Jersey, you can continue hiking the trail; however, most folks like to turn around so that they can do the whole thing in one day.

It's important to note that, while this trail is pretty spectacular and one of the best cross-state hiking trails in the US, it's also grueling and not for beginners. Over the course of the 13.2-mile hike, you'll gain 2,000 feet in elevation, so sturdy boots and plenty of water are a must. The trail tends to get busier closer to the gap, but it's mostly secluded year-round. Of course, your best bet is always to arrive at the trail early in the day to ensure a parking spot. It's a great idea to bring a hiking buddy if you plan on hiking the whole thing. So be sure to share this article with a fellow hiking enthusiast!
