The Can’t-Miss Pennsylvania Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List
Go for a stroll through the forest, past tiny waterfalls and over footbridges on this short, sweet, and family-friendly nature trail in Lancaster.
As a lifelong animal lover, I am always happiest when I’m around animals, whether it’s cuddling with one of my bunnies or snapping photos of the deer who wander through my yard. One of my favorite parts of hiking is knowing I might cross paths with wildlife and maybe even get a few memorable photos. Chances are pretty good a squirrel might scurry across the path or a chipmunk might peek out of a tree log when you set off on this can’t-miss nature hike in Pennsylvania.
Listen as the birds serenade you as you make your way along the 2.6-mile Steinman Run Nature Preserve Trail in Lancaster. The kid-friendly trail, which allows leashed dogs, is considered moderately challenging due to some rocky terrain, slippery conditions after it rains and when the leaves fall in autumn, and tree roots jutting up from the ground, but sturdy shoes should help make navigating the trail easier. Prepare to get a workout, too, as there are several hills along the path.
If you’ve never been to Steinman Run Nature Preserve, set your GPS for the parking lot off of Stump Road. The lot is quite small and fills up quickly, so your best bet is to arrive as early in the day as possible. Earmark around 90 minutes for your hike. Bring plenty of water and insect repellant as it gets really buggy during the warmer months.
Because you’ll be hiking in the forest, you’ll likely enjoy plenty of quiet but the tranquility of the trees comes at a price. You won’t have sweeping views before you, but that doesn’t mean the trail isn't brimming with beauty. The forest trees promise ample shade on sunny days and awe-inspiring foliage in the fall.
Meander along the winding path that leads past moss-covered tree trunks, quiet streams, scores of mushrooms, and wildflowers in the right seasons. A few stream crossings feature simple plank bridges. The trail also has an old stone tunnel that’s carved into the landscape. Keep an eye out, too, because you might spot a tiny waterfall or two.
