Hiking doesn't always mean trekking along rugged paths, climbing hills or stairs, and requiring tough hiking boots. In fact, we can find plenty of trails around Pittsburgh that promise a leisurely stroll that appeals to hikers of all ages and skill levels. This riverfront trail near Pittsburgh, for example, winds along the river, leading to a beautiful waterfall and an abundance of other natural beauty.
Journey just about an hour south of Pittsburgh — to Greene County — where you'll discover the picturesque 5.2-mile Greene River Trail.
You can pick up the trailhead at the Green Cove Yacht Club in Millsboro. The round-trip hike totals just over 10 miles.
The trail, which opened in 2001, beckons hikers, walkers, and joggers with its scenic beauty and well-maintained trail surface. You can even bring your pooch along; just remember to keep him on a leash.
Hike along the trail that starts by meandering alongside Ten Mile Creek, before it turns into the Monongahela River.
The trail will lead you through the quaint towns of Millsboro, Rices Landing, and Crucible, While the trail currently ends in Crucible, a two-mile addition is planned for later in 2019.
Keep an eye and an ear out for the gushing waterfall, too — it's particularly pretty after a rainfall.
If you get tired along the way, just find an empty bench, where you can relax and enjoy the landscape around you.
The Greene River Trail will take you deep into coal country, and when you're in Rices Landing, you'll find quaint spots to get something to eat and to drink.
