This Little-Known Trail Is Quite Possibly the Best Walking and Hiking Path in Pennsylvania

Discover a gem when you follow this little-known trail in Hanover, Pennsylvania, that meanders along a boardwalk and past wildlife.

A leisurely walk can sometimes be just what we need to break up a busy day. We can leave our worries and stress behind, at least for a little bit, as we wander through our neighborhood or along a scenic path.

With its seemingly endless trails, Pennsylvania makes getting outdoors easy (and fun). Explore Codorus State Park on a breathtaking path that's brimming with beauty and surprises—including a fairy-tale footbridge—around every corner. This little-known trail in Hanover, Pennsylvania, is a must-hike at least once.

If you've never been to Codorus State Park, get acquainted with this 3,500-acre natural wonder on the Mary Ann Furnace Trail. Approximately 19 miles of trails wind through the park, although only two of them are designated hiking trails. However, hikers often explore the nine miles of equestrian trails and the more than 13 miles of mountain biking paths.

Teetering between easy and moderately difficult, the scenic trail measures just 2.2 miles and can usually be completed in under an hour. While you'll cross over footbridges, you'll likely deal with some muddy and wet areas, too, so your best bet is to wear shoes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Both kid and dog-friendly, Mary Ann Furnace Trail promises surprises in all seasons, including wild black raspberries and colorful wildflowers during the warmer months. The fall foliage along the scenic trail offers jaw-dropping views, and you can explore on snowshoes on snowy winter days.

As the path winds its way through wooded areas, it offers decent shade—at least during the warmer months—from the sun.

The trail is chock full of opportunities to snap photos. Have some time after your hike? Keep the adventure going by playing a round or two of disc golf or having a picnic. Perhaps the jewel of the state park, the 1,275-acre Lake Marburg is perfect for a morning or an afternoon of boating or fishing.
