There’s A Hike Near Pittsburgh That Leads You Straight To An Abandoned Camp

Hiking usually means quite a few surprises along the trail – whether we cross paths with wild animals or discover a hidden waterfall. With the rich history of Western Pennsylvania, we might also run across abandoned ruins that give us a glimpse into the past. Flat Rock Trail near Pittsburgh, for example, leads to the ruins of an abandoned camp that dates back to before World War II.

Pack the car with everything you need for a day outdoors at Linn Run State Park, just over an hour’s drive from downtown Pittsburgh and home to the remnants of the McGinnis Rod and Gun Club.

Linn Run State Park boasts several hiking trails, but if you want to see the abandoned ruins of this former hunting club, follow the one-mile out and back Flat Rock Trail.

The short and sweet trail has earned an easy rating, making it perfect for hikers of all ages and all skill levels. Pups are permitted on the trail as long as they remain on a leash.

Flat Run Trail is predominately flat and even features a swimming hole along the way. Bring your swimsuit and towel along if you plan to go for a dip.

However, take extreme precaution as the current can be quite strong, and the rocks in the water can be extremely slippery. You might want to wear a pair of sturdy water shoes.

One of the other highlights of the trail is the ruins of the former McGinnis Rod and Gun Club, which was built before World War II. Today, you can see the frame of the abandoned camp as well as its chimney.

Bring your camera along because the ruins, as well as the natural scenery, offer plenty of photo opportunities.
