Sometimes a challenge results in some pretty spectacular rewards too, including some of the most breathtaking views in Pennsylvania. If you're a hiker looking for a challenge, you'll certainly find it along this trail. However, it leads to some of the state's best views from the Big Mountain Overlook in Fort Loudon, Pennsylvania.

A mighty challenge lies ahead of you if you want to drink in some of the best views in Pennsylvania.

Winding its way through Buchanan State Forest, the 5.5-mile Big Mountain Overlook via Charcoal Trail isn't for the faint of heart. You should wear sturdy hiking shoes, and be...

Prepared for an uphill climb, which will take you to the summit of Big Mountain. It sits at 2,458 feet.

Your journey begins in the parking lot, which isn't especially well kept, so keep that in mind.

Because of its challenging terrain, you'll likely find that the trail is quite quiet, perfect if you're up for some alone time. Much of the trail, however, is steep.

But that's not all. In addition to a steep climb, you'll likely deal with some overgrown spots and an abundance of thorns. The trail isn't regularly maintained.

Sturdy shoes are a must, as are plenty of water and snacks to keep you energized. You'll also deal with rocks as you make your way to the summit.

However, chances are pretty good you'll forget about all that hard work when you take a deep breath and admire those sensational views.

Each season promises a different kind of beauty.

You might even catch the sun as it falls asleep.
