Take your love of Pennsylvania hiking to the next level with these awe-inspiring sunset hikes.

Hiking in Pennsylvania is always a special occasion, but there are ways to bring your time outdoors to the next level. One idea is to time your outing just right so that you reach the overlook just as the sky explodes in color. Below, we've outlined some of our very favorite sunset hikes in Pennsylvania. From mountaintop treks to wooded trails, these excursions are sure to leave you awe-inspired.

1. Sunset Rocks Trail

No list of the best sunset trails in Pennsylvania is complete without mentioning Sunset Rocks Trail. It's a long hike, measuring about eight miles and requiring over 1,000 feet of elevation gain. However, those who are up for a bit of a challenge will be rewarded with magnificent views, especially as the sun begins to set. Hikers should note that this trail requires lots of navigating rocks, and the Sunset Rocks are especially slick during the winter. Climbing is not advised!

2. Hawk Rock via Appalachian Trail

Hawk Rock is a perfect hiking destination if you're looking for a short and sweet trek that packs a punch. This 1.5-mile trail gains nearly 700 feet in elevation, but the reward is a magical sunset view framed by a craggy outcropping. There are some steep sections and slippery rocks to navigate, so be sure to bring your sturdiest hiking boots.

3. Mount Minsi via Appalachian Trail

Mount Misi Trail is a 4.8-mile loop located near the Delaware Water Gap. This beautiful, well-marked trail follows the famous Appalachian Trail, leading to a stunning vista. It's considered a moderate trail, and most hikers agree that the rocky terrain can be a bit tiresome to navigate after a while. However, your efforts will be well rewarded if you can watch the sky explode into its fiery sunset colors!

4. Big Pocono Indian Trail

We're headed to the beautiful Big Pocono State Park for our next sunset adventure. The Big Pocono Indian Trail is a 1.7-mile loop that takes most hikers just under an hour to complete. The path is rocky, and some hikers note that it's difficult to follow at times, so be sure to watch out for the red blazes. Once you reach the peak, you'll be treated to a spectacular sunset show.

5. Little Gap to Radio Tower

We'll end this list with a short-and-sweet 1.1-mile hike near Danielsville. Little Gap to Radio Tower Trail offers hikers a quiet, secluded trek through the woods and, eventually, to a lovely overview. Time your hike just right, and you'll be treated to a beautiful orange, red, and pink palette.

Please note: Hiking at dusk or a little after can be tricky, especially as navigating rocky trails in the dark is not advised. If you do plan on hiking at sunset, be sure to bring a flashlight to help you navigate safely.
