The 56-Mile Lazy River in Oregon Where You’ll Find Us All Summer Long
Float, swim, and soak up the sunshine along Oregon’s scenic Sandy River near Troutdale — a 56-mile natural playground with endless summer adventure.
If you're looking for the perfect lazy river in Oregon for a sunny afternoon, head to the Sandy River just outside Portland. I grew up swimming and floating down this river, and it's still my favorite place to spend a sunny day. In fact, this may be one of the best places to spend a summer day in Oregon, and a beautiful place for a day trip with the entire family. Let me tell you why.
Where to Begin Your Lazy River Adventure
There are multiple spots to enter the Sandy River, whether you want to float for a few hours or stay put in one spot to swim. I particularly love Dodge Park, Glenn Otto Swimming Beach in Troutdale, Sandy River Delta Park, Dabney State Recreation Area, and Oxbow Regional Park. Wherever you enter to start your fun, the Sandy River is great because it has a gentle current and offers plenty of beaches and stopping points along the way. In fact, floating down this river is a picture-perfect, family-friendly Oregon activity for a hot summer day. My kids love to grab a tube and float, splash, and play in the Sandy. Even my dog loves to play in this river.
What To Know Before Floating the Sandy River

Rafting down the Sandy makes for an enjoyable afternoon and is the perfect warm-weather activity. Just make sure to always bring along life jackets. You don't want to forget sun protection as well, and plenty of water to keep you hydrated. While you can spend an afternoon floating along, there are fun spots for jumping in the water along the way, too. However, always use caution when jumping into the river—safety first! Spend just a short time or several hours on this river—there's plenty to do in this beautiful space just outside of Portland.

One thing to know before you go: the water can be quite brisk! Of all Oregon rivers, the Sandy River has the highest percentage of glacier-fed water, meaning temperatures are sometimes shockingly cold. If you do plan to swim, wear appropriate waterproof layers to keep your body temperature warm. Also, logistically, you'll want to have another car parked at the end of your float trip so you can shuttle back to your starting point. Lastly, keep in mind that there are strong undertows in this river that can easily sweep both swimmers and floaters down the river. Be smart when in and around the water.
