Simpson Reef Overlook is designated by a roadside stop between Cape Arago State Park and Shore Acres State Park.
The overlook can also be accessed via the Simpson Reef Loop Trail, a lovely 3.2-mile loop. Hikers have noted that the trail isn't as well maintained as others, but the views are well worth the effort.
It's truly remarkable to see the water beyond the verdant hardwood forests.
The beautiful viewing area is the crown jewel of this stretch of Oregon coastline. From here, visitors will enjoy views of the scattered rocks of Simpson Reef, the largest of which is Shell Island.
It's nearly impossible not to hear the barking of sea lions given that this is the largest haul-out spot for seals and sea lions in Oregon.
