This small state park was established in 2009 and sits on just 62 acres. It's pretty small, but you can go deep on its trails and enjoy fantastic views of the Wallowa Mountains. The name of this park - Iwetemlaykin - is pronounced ee-weh-TEMM-lye-kinn, and means "at the edge of the lake." The lake here is called Knight's Pond, and the Wallowa Mountains are reflected in it perfectly.
The Iwetemlaykin State Heritage Site is small at only 62 acres in size, but it's something very special. This park is in an area that is part of the ancestral homelands of the Nez Perce Tribe.
This park is for day use only. There is no campground here. However, there are trails that offer beautiful views.
The trails are open to foot traffic only. Bikes, ATVs, and horses are not allowed.
That means you can enjoy some very quiet serenity as you wander through this park and enjoy the sights and quiet nature sounds around you.
You can bring your dog if you'd like, but you'll have to keep him or her on a leash.
Deer live in this park as well as foxes and many species of birds. Cougars and bears have been spotted here too, so be aware.
Take time to read the interpretive signs here to learn about the land and the people who have lived here over the past centuries.
Stay on the trail and take your trash with you when you leave. There's a bathroom by the exit and trash receptacles, too.
This park closes at dusk, but you can watch the sun begin to dip down below the horizon before you go.
