This Ohio Trail Bursts With Daffodils Each Spring
For a vibrant springtime adventure, hike the short-and-sweet Daffodil Trail in Summit County, Ohio. It's one of the best ways to embrace the season.
I've always loved daffodils. As one of the first flowers to emerge after winter, their bright yellow blooms are synonymous with the arrival of spring in Ohio. When I was little, I used to pick bouquets of them from my backyard, making small arrangements and delighting in their fresh, delicate scent. To celebrate the magic of springtime—and daffodils—I'd recommend a visit to the Daffodil Trail at Furnace Run Metro Park this season. Open year-round, this trail is a must during early spring, when it's lined with hundreds upon hundreds of cheerful yellow blooms.
Tucked away near Richfield, Ohio, is a hidden gem of a springtime destination known as Daffodil Trail. Its official name is the H.S. Wagner Daffodil Trail, named for the property's former owner and the park district’s first director-secretary. Wagner was a daffodil enthusiast himself, and he planted some of the first daffodils in the park. Today, it's estimated that there are thousands.
The Daffodil Trail is a loop that measures just 0.8 miles, so it's easy to complete in about 20 minutes. Of course, you won't want to rush this outing, given just how many delightful blooms there are to see. As you wind along the gentle path, which, according to some hikers, can get muddy after a big rain, you'll notice patches of bright yellow flowers.
The vibrant hues of yellow, gold, and white are such a refreshing contrast to the grey and brown of the woods, reminding us that warmer days aren't far away after all. It's difficult to predict exactly when the daffodils will begin to bloom, but on average, you can expect flowers between mid-to-late March and mid-April. Of course, it's important to remember to only admire the flowers; these are not for picking, as tempting as it may be.
After you've completed the loop, feel free to continue exploring more of Furnace Run Metro Park. Another popular trail is the Rock Creek Loop, a 1.3-mile circuit that will take you on an enchanting trail through the woods.
