Once the wind dies down and the snow settles, there are some absolutely beautiful landscapes in North Dakota as a result. Just because it is winter doesn't mean you can't go out and admire them. Many of the state's parks and recreation areas have trails that are open year-round, some specifically for winter hikes. Whether you are going with your own boots or traversing the snow in snowshoes or cross-country skis, these trails are perfectly picturesque this time of year. Here are some of the best winter hikes in North Dakota!
1. Cottonwood Trail - Cross Ranch State Park (near Hensler)
Surround yourself with peaceful, frosty forests in Cross Ranch State Park on the lovely Cottonwood Trail. This specific trail is kept groomed for skiing each winter, and snowshoe rentals are also available here.
2. Fort Stevenson/North Pine Loop - Fort Stevenson State Park (near Garrison)
This winter hike in North Dakota winds through the calm forests surrounding parts of the northern shore of Lake Sakakawea. You can walk the trail or cross country ski. It's simply stunning!
3. Whitetail Trail - Turtle River State Park (near Grand Forks)
This 1.31-mile trail takes you on a path along the winding Turtle River as well as over it halfway through. It is open to both cross country skiing and hiking, and you can bring your dog along with you!
4. Woodland Trail - Beaver Lake State Park (near Napoleon)
Alongside Beaver Lake are some beautiful trails that you can take, including the .67 mile Woodland Trail. They are lovely in the wintertime!
5. Beaver Loop Trail - Lake Metigoshe State Park (near Bottineau)
The breathtaking Beaver Loop trail goes through wooded areas, over two bridges, and offers regular hiking, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. It is just under two miles long and goes around and near multiple ponds and lakes.
6. Shoreline Trail - Lake Sakakawea State Park (near Pick City)
Take a scenic stroll along the shoreline of Lake Sakakawea on this delightful trail. They do allow for snowshoeing and cross country skiing here, as well as regular hiking. Whichever you prefer, it is a very scenic winter hike in North Dakota!
7. Gunlogsun Nature Preserve Trail - Icelandic State Park (near Cavalier)
The winding trail through part of the 200 acre nature preserve in this state park will take you through some absolutely amazing sights. There are plenty of plants and animals to be found here, some that you won't find any other place in North Dakota.
8. Grahams Island Trails - Grahams Island State Park (near Devils Lake)
Right alongside of Devils Lake, there are about three miles of cross country ski trails that are groomed weekly all winter long at this state park. They make great trails to go at your own pace and just enjoy your surroundings.
