Autumn in North Dakota is a particularly magic-filled time; as the leaves (and temperatures) change (and drop), we're reminded of how everything is temporary - but we might as well enjoy the moment we're in, and we're in fall foliage country, baby! There are many excellent options when it comes to leaf peeping in North Dakota, and one of our favorites is a small state park that comes alive at this time of year. Come out and discover some of the best fall foliage in North Dakota at Fort Ransom State Park.
Fort Ransom State Park is a fairly small (less than 1000 acres) state park in North Dakota that is the dictionary definition of an autumnal paradise.
From the moment you arrive, you'll be seduced by gorgeous hues of gold, crimson, and orange.
Personally, we love it when the colors are all at different points in their changing.
Your best chances of witnessing greens, gold, and reds all together is in mid-to-late September.
Come October, the fall foliage is in full force in orange and gold.
There's a farmstead within the state park where you can experience pioneer life. The park itself is so much more than just a pretty face - it's a place to learn.
A stroll on any one of the several hiking trails within the park is the best possible way to experience it all firsthand.
You'll find yourself immersed in a world of awe-inspiring color, unable to catch your breath as it's repeatedly taken away.
The Fort Ransom State Park Loop is just over nine miles long and absolutely stunning.
The Little Twig/Nelson 80/Firebreak/Pederson Hills Trail is a mashup of some truly beautiful trails - you almost get to sample them all!
If you'd like, you can stay the night in one of the yurts, cabins, and even wagons - whatever you're looking for, you'll find it.
Fort Ransom State Park is famous for its excellent "glamping" options. We love the yurts and the wagons - how often do you get to sleep in an old wagon?
You can, of course, camp the traditional way. There are plenty of campsites to choose from (though we suggest you reserve yours in advance - these book up quickly).
For more information about the wonderful trails at Fort Ransom State Park, check out the official listings on AllTrails. Wanna amp up your hiking game? Check out AllTrails+ - you won't even know how you did without it! For more information on the park itself, visit the official North Dakota Parks and Recreation website. There, you'll find information on booking a campsite (or a glampsite), as well.
