The Iconic Trail in North Dakota Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime

Discover Buck Hill Trail, an iconic trail in North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park, offering sweeping views and unforgettable scenery.

I believe that Theodore Roosevelt National Park doesn’t get the attention it deserves. This is one of North Dakota’s finest gems, with fascinating geological formations, mesmerizing wildlife, and magical stargazing opportunities. This national park also offers numerous bucket list activities, such as hiking the Buck Hill Trail. This hike is short, a little challenging, but incredibly scenic. It is an iconic trail in North Dakota that I believe everyone should explore at least once in their lifetime.

There is so much to love about Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Here, several hiking trails capture the beauty of the area and highlight features that make this destination unique. While I could recommend several trails in this North Dakota national park, one that everyone should tackle at least once is the Buck Hill Trail.

Located in the South Unit of the park, the Buck Hill Trail is quite short—less than 0.5 miles round trip. It’s also an out-and-back trail that is well-maintained and easy to follow. However, this hiking trail has a standout feature: it leads you to the highest accessible point in the park.

Because you are hiking to the highest peak, get ready for a climb. You’ll want to put on your hiking boots and prepare for some steep inclines. There are some stairs to help you along your way, but this isn’t an easy stroll. Your calves will likely be talking to you during this adventure.

Despite the short distance and the steep inclines, this hike is unforgettable. The trail takes you to one of the most incredible overlooks in the park, and the views are breathtaking throughout your entire journey. You may even have some wildlife come up and say hello as you hike. Just make sure to give them the space that they deserve.

At the peak, you’ll enjoy 360-degree views of the remarkable landscape this national park is known for, and on clear days, the horizon seems to stretch endlessly. I suggest that you stop, take a seat, and enjoy some of this natural beauty. There is so much to love about North Dakota.

The short distance may not sound too challenging, but you’ll still want to come prepared for your hike. Bring plenty of sun protection as there is little shade. Be prepared for high winds as well. The views may be inspiring, but it can be extremely windy at the top.

Because this trail is within a national park, you must pay an entry fee to access the trail. It's also wise to ensure there are no closures in the national park that could affect your adventure. Visit the website of the National Park Service for the most up-to-date information. Theodore Roosevelt National Park is open 24 hours a day, year-round, although Visitor Centers and services are often closed or have reduced hours on certain holidays, such as Christmas Day and Thanksgiving.
