Underrated National Forest Hikes in North Carolina That Rival 3 National Park Hikes

These national forest hikes in North Carolina rival some of the most popular national park hikes.

From the Great Smoky Mountains all the way up to Kenai Fjords, America’s National Parks have some truly spectacular hiking trails. Don't get me wrong, our National Parks are worthy of a road trip, but you can find beautiful hiking trails just about anywhere. North Carolina, in particular, is home to some of the best hiking trails in the country, but I understand that those popular hiking trails can come with crowds. Luckily, several national forest hikes in North Carolina are equally worthy of your time, and they come with all the perks of the popular hikes, just with fewer crowds. Heck, they might even rival the National Park hikes!

Looking Glass Rock Trail - Pisgah National Forest

Rivals: Cadillac North Ridge Trail (Acadia National Park)

The hike to the top of Looking Glass Rock offers some of the best views in the state. It’s about 5.6 miles with an elevation gain of 1,679 feet, so you’ll undoubtedly get your steps in. The panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains are mesmerizing, that’s for sure. This is one trail that’s perfect for fall! Imagine those mountains bathed in fall colors…yes, please.

Pro Tip: The trail may be a bit slippery, so make sure you’ve got proper hiking boots or trekking poles.

Glen Falls Trail - Nantahala National Forest

Rivals: Rainbow Falls Trail (Great Smoky Mountains National Park)

The Glen Falls Trail is a 2.6-mile out-and-back trail that leads you through an ultra-scenic part of the Nantahala National Forest in the Overflow Wilderness Study Area. The waterfall may be the main attraction, but it’s certainly not the only viewpoint on the hike. Since it’s a relatively easy trail (and there’s a viewing deck for the falls), you’ll likely encounter others on the trail. There’s also a campsite nearby, should you want to turn the day trip into an overnight adventure.

Pro tip: Plan your visit after a heavy rain to see the waterfall in its full glory.

Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower Trail - Pisgah National Forest

Rivals: Kuwohi Observation Tower Trail (Great Smoky Mountains National Park)

Climbing to the top of a lookout tower to check out the view is one of my favorite types of hikes. Lookout towers, by design, have some sensational views, and the Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower is one of our favorites. The views are offensively beautiful, and the hike to reach the tower isn’t that strenuous. You can reach it in about 1.5 miles with about 350 feet of elevation gain. Once you get to the tower, climb the stairs and soak in those sweeping views!

Pro tip: Plan your visit around sunset.

While I love our National Parks, sometimes it’s nice to find dupes where you can still enjoy our natural scenery without the crowds. What are your favorite forest hikes in North Carolina? Let me know on our nomination page.

If you're hoping to add more hiking trails to your weekends, check out these scenic hikes in North Carolina. All of them are under three miles, so they won't take up too much of your day, but they pay off with some beautiful views!
