We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Strangest Hiking Trail Name in North Carolina

The Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower Trail is the strangest hiking trail name in North Carolina. Read on to discover how it earned its unique name.

Most mountains and trails in North Carolina earn their names through a combination of either early settlers, biblical references, or Native Americans. For example, Mount Pisgah is a reference from the Bible, while the Uwharrie Mountains were named after a Native American tribe that lived in the region. Most are easy to figure out, but some will raise an eyebrow, like Fryingpan Mountain. The Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower Trail is easily one of the strangest hiking trail names in North Carolina, but how did it (and the mountain) earn its name?

The Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower Trail is located in Canton, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s a 1.5-mile hike that’s a perfect pit stop for those driving along the scenic road and want to stretch their legs while taking in an extraordinary view.

The hike only has about 350 feet of elevation gain. It’s not terribly steep, but it is a gravel path all the way to the fire tower. There’s not much shade on the trail, so bring a hat and/or some sunglasses!

Before long, you’ll come to the Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower. The 70-foot fire tower is one of the tallest in Western North Carolina! It was constructed in the 1940s and served as a fire watch station for nearly 50 years. For half a century, people would spend days at a time in the tower’s cabin, living extremely minimally and constantly scanning the sky for signs of smoke.

Technology has all but eliminated the need for human lookouts nowadays. Sophisticated cameras, infrared imaging, planes, and even drones have taken over the watch. The fire tower was decommissioned in the 1990s, and today, it serves as a viewpoint for the bravest of hikers.

Those without a fear of heights can climb the 70-foot tower to see an extraordinary view. I won’t lie: the tower moves with the wind, and it can get pretty windy up there, so please be careful.

If you manage to climb to the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the valleys below.

But how did Fryingpan Mountain get its name? Certainly, it’s not a Bible reference or a Native American tribe, right? Well, Fryingpan Mountain is rumored to have been named by mountain herders who lived in the region and shared a communal frying pan that hung in a nearby tree.

The Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower hiking trail is a great spot to watch the sunset (hint, hint!). Just make sure you have a flashlight for the hike down and back to the car. Check out our previous article for some of the best sunset hiking trails in North Carolina for more inspiration.
