The Little-Known Natural Wonder In North Carolina That Becomes Even More Enchanting In The Wintertime
For some, a wintery landscape in North Carolina might be more inspiring than at other times of the year. But if you know this lovely state, that's a tough call. Every season brings beauty to the already immensely inspiring geographical offerings available here. And while we might stand in awe among the spring wildflowers and vibrant autumn leaves, a dusting of shimmering snow and ice radiantly glimmering in the sun might be the winner. Sunset Rock Trail at Ravenel Park in Highlands is worth the cold climb to a wondrous view.
Reserve about a half-hour of your day to explore this easy 1.4-mile out-and-back gravel trail.
It is located right off Main Street in Highlands with a few parking spots on the right side of the road. Or you can park in town and follow the walking path to the trail's start.
Watching the sunrise from here has become an institution if you time it just so.
The massive slabs of granite provide seats for this unforgettable morning view.
The route is straight-up to start, but it's not too difficult for toddlers.
While it may seem easier to snuggle up in a blanket on a cold, blustery day, we think the effort is rewarding.
The winter also thins out the crowds.
And snow brings out evidence of others on the trail.
