The Incredible Hike In North Carolina That Leads To A Fascinating Abandoned Grave

Walk the Dunnagan Trail for an exciting hike to an abandoned place in North Carolina. Located at Eno River State Park in Durham, this two-mile trail leads us right to an old cemetery. The best way in is to enter at the Continental Entrance on Continental Drive east of Umstead Road. The trail leads to a junction where you'll cross a dry creek and step up to the next bank. A foundation to the old Dunnagan home place is on the right and the cemetery is on the left. While the moderately challenging trail has many rocks and roots, it's not too strenuous. This trek is definitely worthwhile, especially to find so much history out in the middle of nowhere.

Follow this beautiful trail right along the Eno River’s edge.

The distinct tree markings keep you on the right path.

The view is lovely at every turn where you can swim if you like.

We like the variety of landscapes, wooded trails, and the pretty scenes of the sun peeping through as it awaits our gaze.

Upon reaching the fork on the path, take the right path, and not far ahead is a small cemetery on the left.

The headstone of P. (Phebe) Catherine Dunnigan reads: Born March 7, 1826 and Died Jan. 6, 1914. There is one marked grave and four graves marked with fieldstones both at the head and foot. Find out the history of this woman and her family on the Eno River Association website.

The cemetery clearing is also a good place for a rest.

Other remains include what looks like an old airplane.

And you'll also find a car graveyard sitting among the trees.
