When winter in New York comes, we all have a tendency to want to stay indoors. As the carol goes, the weather outside can be frightful and the fire is so delightful. But just because the temperatures are low doesn't mean you can't get out and delight in the beauty that surrounds us. Some of the trails here are inaccessible or unsafe in the winter, but we've got plenty of winter hikes in New York to enjoy. Bundle up in your warm weather gear and hit the trails: it's a winter wonderland out there just waiting for you to come enjoy it!
At more than 3,600 acres, there's a lot of land to explore at Hammond Hill State Forest. This natural wonderland is a paradise for anyone seeking outdoor recreation.
The park has many trails at a variety of lengths and difficulty levels. There are lots of side trails available, so don't feel pressured to stick to any one route.
The nice thing about there being so many side paths is if you end up off course, you'll get back to the main path eventually; just stick to the maintained trails!
In winter, the trails here are great for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Horseback riding is also popular, but we're fond of just plain old exploration by foot.
Winter in New York is such a beautiful time. When temperatures get too low, it can be dangerous, so make sure you are wearing proper attire and always stick to the designated pathways.
