The Rugged And Remote Hiking Trail In New York That Is Well-Worth The Effort
The Blue Ridge Wilderness is 47,177-acres of land and part of the larger Adirondack Forest Preserve. Though most of Blue Ridge Wilderness doesn’t contain trails, the Sawyer Mountain Trail is one of only a few exceptions—and what an amazing exception it is. It’s a beautiful and somewhat remote trail that is perfect for the whole family, and an excellent way to spend a summer day. We think it’s quite likely the best hiking trail near Indian Lake, New York. To learn more, keep reading below.
The trail runs 2.2 miles out-and-back. Most hikers will find the trail to be somewhat challenging, though fully manageable. It takes between one and two hours to complete the hike.
The trailhead is situated on Route 28/30 in the Adirondacks, in the middle of Indian Lake and Blue Mountain Lake.
Beyond hiking, many birders will find sights to enjoy on this trail. In the winter, it is great for snowshoeing. If you have a dog, bring them along! They can even go off-leash on some parts of the trail.
Though the summit is fairly heavily wooded, you can enjoy one or two lookouts as you incline to the top. There is even a third lookout 100 yards past the summit. They are all a great way to take in views of nearby mountains.
Sawyer Mountain reaches around 2,600 feet of elevation.
On the hike, you will encounter a variety of maple, fir, beech and birch trees. You might even see a toad or two on the ground!
For a great hike in the Adirondacks region, check out the Sawyer Mountain Trail. And while you are in the area, why not check out this charming coffee shop or this festive restaurant in Saranac Lake, which really gives diners a true taste of all the region has to offer. And, for those looking to stay overnight after their hike, we recommend Phoenix Inn Resort, which is 15 miles from Indian Lake—like we said, this trail is a bit remote—and features all sorts of fun accommodations, including a swimming pool and a fitness center.
