There's something magical about a truly isolated hiking trail, where it feels like you're the only person in the whole forest - and then there's the other kind of hiking trail, where the traffic to get in makes you feel like you're heading to Disney World! But you know what? There's got to be a reason for the crowds, and some of these hikes are among the best hikes in New York. That definitely goes for the Lake Minnewaska Carriage Road Loop, a magical lake hike in New York in the middle of some of Central New York's most beautiful landscapes. This 1.9-mile easy loop trail is a popular destination for older hikers, for families, and for just about everyone else. The good news is...summer is over, and the crowds might be getting a bit smaller, so let's take a look at why this should be your next Empire State hiking destination!
Lake Minnewaska is one of the most beautiful lakes in central New York, surrounded by forests and rock formations in every directions. And the good news is, you can see every inch of it from an easy, family-friendly trail with a simple loop formation.
The 1.9-mile trail is a very popular spot for birdwatching, and it's also home to several small bridges that add a gorgeous rustic touch to the well-maintained pathway.
You won't need anything but a decent pair of boots to take on this trail, and dogs are welcome as long as they're on a leash. The accessibility is a big part of why this trail is so popular.
Another big reason? The many beautiful water access points to Lake Minnewaska. This might just be one of the most beautiful beaches in Central New York, and you'll have plenty of company to enjoy it!
Fishing is not permitted in the lake, but swimming is allowed when lifeguards are on duty during the summer months. In the other months, boating is the most popular activity here.
Maybe the most famous site on this trail is the small wooden gazebo, which makes for a great photo op and an incredible place to sit, rest, and take in one of the best views in New York State.
