The Iconic Trail in New York Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime

When it comes to New York destinations, most people immediately think of either the big city or the stunning nature of upstate. But there are some surprisingly gorgeous destinations in unexpected places, like Long Island, only an hour or so outside of the city.

That's where you'll find Blydenburgh County Park, one of the most beautiful county parks in New York. This charming destination in Smithtown is home to what might be the best pond hike in the state, the Blydenburgh County Park Stump Pond Loop. This 6.1-mile loop trail is a laid-back, easy hike popular for anglers and birdwatchers, and it's a hidden gem every New Yorker should visit. Not to mention the fact that it has a fascinating history.

Situated at the headwaters of the Nissequogue River, Blydenburgh County Park is famous for its beautiful pond, which was created in 1798 by Isaac Blydenburgh. Originally, the river was dammed to form a grist mill. On the original river banks, you could see tree stumps protruding through the water, which inspired the name Stump Pond. Today, it's a popular spot with anglers when fishing is in season. The best way to see this park is on a 6.1-mile loop trail that takes you all around the perimeter of the lake.

The path is easy to walk, with little in the way of uneven terrain and only a few bridges. This is a dog-friendly area if they're on a leash, and it's an ideal adventure for the whole family thanks to the gorgeous views and beautiful nature, especially in the fall.

The area is also home to the Blydenburgh Park Historic District, which contains nine total structures dating back to the 1700s. This is a great place to learn about the history of Long Island and get some amazing pictures on the hike.

Due to a dam break in late summer of 2024, the water level of the lake is low, and some sections of the trail may be closed as the park continues repairs, but this also offers a fascinating opportunity to see the lake like never before. The park remains open, and employees will offer guidance about any adjustments that need to be made to your hike.
