New York has an endless list of natural wonders that will win you over. Some of our favorites are our large bodies of water. So, why not start planning a relaxing getaway to one of the best lakes near NYC? These lakes in NY offer unforgettable adventures and peaceful spots where you can unwind. These destinations are ones that are wonderful to visit during this time of year.

1. Keuka Lake

Everyone has their own favorite Finger Lake to visit, one of ours being the beautiful Keuka Lake. One of the most recognizable New York lakes, Keuka's northern end splits off into two branches. At the southern end of the lake, you'll find the town of Hammondsport and at the northern end you'll find the town of Penn Yan, two incredible destinations to explore during the summer. Lining the western shores of the lake you'll also find that there are a ton of scenic vineyards that are worth visiting!

2. Blue Mountain Lake

Tucked away up in the Adirondacks near the Sargent Pond Wild Forest, Blue Mountain Lake covers over 1,2000 acres. On the shores of the lake you'll be able to find perfect summer destinations like the Adirondack Experience (known to many as the Adirondack Museum) and a public town beach that's a bit more secluded than the beaches you're normally used to visiting.

3. Skaneateles Lake

At the northern end of Skaneateles Lake you'll find the town of Skaneateles, a great place to take in the views of one of the most beautiful lakes in New York. A gorgeous color you won't believe until you see it for yourself, the lake's water will steal your breath away. In town you'll find a pier that's a popular spot to take in the views of this scenic area, as well as waterfront parks filled with benches and boat tours that will give you the opportunity to get out on the water yourself.

4. Lake Minnewaska

Head down the Catskills if you're looking for an adventurous day and see the stunning sights that await you at the one-mile long Lake Minnewaska. One of three sky lakes that you'll find within Minnewaska Preserve State Park, the gorgeous scenery that you'll find lining the lake are sights that will get you excited to explore the area.

5. Lake Ontario

Out along the shores of Lake Ontario you'll find an assortment of beaches, waterfront towns and incredible waterfront restaurants that are worth checking out once it's warm outside. Charming destinations like the town of Olcott make for beautiful day trips during the summer as well as spots like Rudy's in Oswego that will become your new seasonal restaurant to visit every year.

6. Lake George

Giving you memorable views of the Adirondacks, Lake George has so many waterfront spots that are all great reasons to come up and check out this destination. In the town of Lake George you'll find public beaches and state-run beaches, as well as boat tours, parasailing, waterfront restaurants, and beautiful campgrounds. The ultimate summer destination, you'll want to spend as much time here as you possibly can.

7. Lake Erie

New York may not be able to claim too much of Lake Erie, but this incredible natural wonder makes up the majority of our most western border. From the Queen City of Buffalo to the small town of Westfield, along the shores of this lake you can find amazing state parks, historic lighthouses and remote attractions that you'll fall in love with.

8. Nine Corner Lake

Within the Adirondack town of Caroga Lake, Nine Corner Lake is one of the most beautiful New York lakes to explore. Just off of Route 29A, you'll take a .9 mile long hike to get to where you'll go swimming at the lake. Featuring a rope swing and rock that you can swim out to and hang out on, this remote spot has a trail that follows a creek and even has waterfalls.

9. Oneida Lake

Ready to take a summer trip out to New York's largest lake? So are we! Not far from the city of Syracuse, the lake covers nearly 80 square miles of our state. During the summer you'll find that one of the most popular getaways to enjoy out on the lake is the charming village of Sylvan Beach, here you'll find delicious restaurants, a local amusement park and lovely state parks.

10. Heart Lake

Nestled up against the Adirondack Loj, you'll find plenty of trails in the area that will either give you views of Heart Lake or actually lead you to the shores of the lake itself. Surrounded by views of our High Peaks, this lake is one that's great to visit if you're looking to do some exploring and relaxing by the water.

11. Lake Champlain

The last of our three major lakes that we share territories with, Lake Champlain is lined with some of our most secluded towns and attractions. From historic locations like the ruins of Fort Crown Point to spots like the South Bay Pier that's great for fishing and gives you a view of Vermont, this stunning New York lake is surrounded by jaw-dropping views of New York and our wonderful neighbor.

12. Green Lake

Within the unique Green Lakes State Park, both Green and Round Lakes are mind-blowing natural wonders, easily two of the most beautiful lakes in New York. But out of the two lakes that both don't experience any turnovers, Green Lake features a beach that gives you the chance to submerge yourself in this gorgeous water.

13. Long Lake

One of our favorite destinations within the Adirondacks to visit no matter what time of year it is, there's lots to be experienced during the summer on Long Lake. On the lake, you'll find a public beach in town and also seaplane rides that will give you a birds-eye view of New York's tallest mountains.

14. Great Sacandaga Lake

Another uniquely shaped body of water in New York that will catch your eye on a map, Great Sacandaga Lake is one of the largest lakes you'll find within our state and the Adirondacks. Just south of Lake George, this lake is a great place to check out if you're looking to enter the Adirondack Park but don't have the time to drive all the way up to its most northern areas. Drawing in residents from all over to experience the lake's great fishing and swimming spots, views and tasty restaurants, you'll quickly find out why this is one of the best lakes in New York to visit during summer.

15. Chautauqua Lake

Head out to Western New York and the 17-mile long body of water known as Chautauqua Lake can be discovered. The small and secluded lake is one that's wonderful to check out if you're looking to take a weekend getaway to a waterfront destination, with plenty of great rental properties lining the shores.
