Green Lakes State Park has plenty of great events in September. For those of us in the Syracuse area, it’s worth attending one—or a few. Kicking off this great slate of activity is the park's Candle Lantern Hike. The hike is a perfect way to say goodbye to summer and welcome in a new season. It's one of the best events at a state park near Syracuse. To learn more, keep reading!
The candle lantern hike at Green Lakes State Park allows visitors to have fun in the park after dark, using only candlelight. First, participants will construct a candle lantern, and then they will take a hike, first passing by the lake shore and then through the woods.
Green Lakes State Park is located east of the city of Syracuse. It features two amazing glacial lakes and plenty of upland forest. The park also has a full 18-hole golf course. In the winter, visitors can snowshoe and cross-country ski.
The park also has a beach, cabins and campsites, food, trails, picnic tables, a playground and a whole lot more.
Green Lakes State Park is named so for a reason. Both lakes are meromictic lakes. That means that they have layers of water that never intermix. The green color comes from the fact that there are high levels of calcium carbonate in the lake.
If you want to participate in the candle lantern hike, you should meet at the Reserve Shelter Ball Field. Don’t forget to wear bug spray and dress in layers.
Another great event in September is the “Secrets of the Lake” guided hike, which allows for visitors to get a deeper appreciation of the park and the lake.
For a whole host of fun events, Green Lake State Park should be any nature lover's September destination. While in the area, why not also check out the oldest restaurant in downtown Syracuse? For fans of handcrafted home goods, there is also Calico Gals, which is Upstate New York's largest quilt shop. And, for those looking to stay the night after any of these events at Green Lake State Park, we recommend the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Dewitt Syracuse.
