You’ll Be Pleased To Hear That Buffalo’s Upcoming Winter Is Supposed To Be More Mild Than Last Year’s
Buffalo winters are notoriously harsh. Cold temperatures, freezing rain, and piles of snow along with lots of wind can make leaving the house feel like an Olympic event. In fact, this last winter might be one of the worst in recent memory. But before you begin an arduous training program to prepare for the jumps, hurdles, and sprints that are necessary just to run an errand, check out what we’ve learned from this year’s Farmer’s Almanac about Buffalo winter predictions!
In any other city, we might say that last year was one for the record books.
But the reality of western New York is one that means lots of snow, lots of ice, and lots of wind... and this past winter, that's exactly what we got.
After a nice break from harsh winters during the 2016-2017 season, last year brought over 100" of snow by March.
Buffalo averages about 88.5" of snow each year, but during the 2017-2018 season, the city was covered by almost 20 inches above that on the first day of spring.
While last winter is still firmly stuck in our minds, there's hope for this year!
According to the Farmer's Almanac Long Range Weather Forecast, Buffalo and western New York are looking at a much warmer winter in 2018 and 2019.
In fact, things will likely be far milder this winter than what we normally expect in Buffalo.
Temperatures will be warmer, but Buffalonians can expect more than average rainfall, but snowfall should return to average levels.
The coldest part of the year will begin in mid-December. Temperatures will drop again in late December, January, and at the start of February.
Snowfall will be heaviest in the first part of December, early and late in January, early February, and again in mid-March.
You can look forward to April and May being slightly warmer than usual, with about average rainfall.
As we progress through 2019, summer will be slightly cooler, but rainfall will be lower than normal, making for some lovely, dry days to get out and enjoy everything western New York has to offer!
While a milder winter will be more than welcome, when the snow does come at least we have this wacky natural phenomenon to see...and laugh at!
