This Hike In New Jersey Will Give You An Unforgettable Experience
With all of our state parks and nature preserves, New Jersey has plenty of hiking opportunities. There are so many options that it can be hard choosing where to start, so why not go for a tried and true route? If you're looking for a fantastic half-day hike with incredible views and a moderate difficulty level, this hike is for you! More experienced hikers can complete the journey in just a few hours, while those looking for a more relaxed hike can make this an all day adventure!
Your hike will start here, at Buttermilk Falls.
At nearly 200 feet in height, this is the tallest waterfall in New Jersey, and a spectacular starting point for your journey. You'll find parking here, along with well maintained scenic viewing areas.
You'll trek portions of the historic Appalachian Trail.
How many people can say they've hiked the Appalachian Trail? You can, should you embark on this trip! The trail spans 2200 miles, from Georgia to Maine - you'll cover between 1-2% of that. I say it still counts.
Enjoy waterfront views of Crater Lake and Hemlock Pond.
Crater Lake is a lovely place to stop for a picnic lunch. You'll find rocks to sit on and restrooms near the parking area.
You'll also score some sweeping views of our state from above.
The views on this hike are limited, but still beautiful. Photo opportunity? Definitely.

Have you taken this 7.5-mile hike before? Are you planning to now? If you'd prefer a shorter route that still features the best sites, have a friend pick you up at the Crater Lake parking area. I won't tell! What is your favorite trail in New Jersey?
