The Atlantic City Boardwalk definitely ranks among the best boardwalks in the world. Originally built in 1870, it was the first boardwalk in America, and it currently spans over 4 miles, making it the longest boardwalk in existence. Prior to a destructive 1944 hurricane it came in at a whopping 7 miles, running through Ventnor and Margate. From shopping to dining and entertainment, the Atlantic City Boardwalk has so much to offer. Here are 12 amazing places you should definitely check out, listed from north to south.
1. Garden Pier
Towards the northern end of the Atlantic City Boardwalk, Garden Pier is home to the Atlantic City Historical Museum and Atlantic City Art Center. The museum features rotating exhibits focused on Atlantic City's culture, boardwalks, unique Prohibition-era history and more. The suggested donation is $3 for adults, $2 for students and seniors, or free on Wednesdays. The art center offers new exhibits each month, free admission and free parking.
2. The Playground at Caesars
Formerly known as The Pier Shops, you'll find an abundance of shopping and dining options. Visitors can often enjoy live music, but my favorite part is the scenery. Head to the third floor for an indoor "beach" complete with ocean views and sand.
3. Landshark Bar & Grill
This year-round restaurant offers a seasonal bar right on the beach. You'll find casual cuisine from burgers to fish tacos and live music on select nights.
4. Fralinger's Salt Water Taffy
There are several Fralinger's locations along the boardwalk. Stop by any to pick up the classic Jersey treat, along with sweets from James' Confections and Bayard's Chocolates.
5. Steel Pier
Built in 1897, this historic pier was once one of the most popular entertainment destinations in the United States. It originally operated as a theater and at one point spanned nearly 2,300 feet. It now serves as an amusement park that juts out about 1,000 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. You'll find more than 25 rides with varying thrill levels, skill games, dining options and an arcade. Photos above are from 1915 and 2013.
6. Central Pier
Central Pier offers an amazing arcade and go-kart speedway, right on the ocean. There aren't many tracks as scenic as this, just don't get distracted by the views.
7. Haunted Tales
This infamous boardwalk attraction is less scary and more cheesy but it definitely is something different. If you're looking for some unique, affordable fun, check out Haunted Tales with its special effects theater and coffin ride.
8. Korean War Veterans Memorial
This truly beautiful memorial is free and open to the public daily. You'll find spectacular sculptures and frescoes along with a wall honoring New Jersey residents who lost their lives in service during the Korean War.
9. Bally's Beach Bar
More popular with a younger crowd, anyone can enjoy drinks on the beach here. More relaxed during the day, you'll find DJs and live music at night. Some come for the bikini-clad waitresses, but I think the frozen drinks on hot summer days make this spot worth a visit.
10. The Quarter at Tropicana
This Cuba-themed retail and entertainment complex features over 40 stores, several restaurants (a mix of casual and fine dining), nearly a dozen night clubs AND a spa. Shop all day, head to bluemercury for a massage and grab dinner before the night is over. The Tropicana also features a nightly light and sound show on the boardwalk, with fireworks every Saturday until September 10th.
11. Atlantic City Miniature Golf
If you're looking for some active outdoor fun other than the beach, AC Mini Golf is a great pick. Enjoy 18 holes of elevated greens, enjoyable scenery and even a few unique water features.
12. Boardwalk Hall
This magnificent entertainment venue hosts everything from conventions to concerts. It is also home to the the world's largest AND loudest pipe organ - Guinness World Records approved.
Of course I can't forget the push carts. While not a spot, they are certainly a popular attraction in their own right. What is your favorite place to visit on the Atlantic City Boardwalk? What is your favorite boardwalk in New Jersey?
