The Underrated Local Nature Preserve In New Hampshire Where You Can Explore Wetlands

I've stated this in previous articles, but I love hiking to water features. I find the presence of open or running water to be very peaceful. Swamps, marches, and bogs are especially attractive, and fortunately, there are plenty of them in New Hampshire. Durham's Longmarsh Preserve is one NH nature walk where you can explore local marshes and maybe even catch a glimpse of their residents.

Durham's Longmarsh Preserve is comprised of four separate conserved land parcels: Langmain Farm at 45 acres, Colby Marsh at 13 acres, and Horsehide Creek at 15 acres.

Most of the preserve lies within the watershed of Crommet Creek. This is an ecologically important drainage that empties into Great Bay.

Horsehide Creek drains the northern reaches of the preserve, which then carries water northward to the Oyster River.

The Langmaid Farm portion of the preserve includes remnants of the area's agricultural past, such as stone walls and old foundations.

A wander through the preserve provides beautiful views of marshes and rocky outcroppings, as well as mature pine and oak forests.

Many species of wildlife call the preserve home, including osprey, great blue heron, wood ducks, and numerous other birds.

Where there's water, there are also usually beavers. These industrious critters have built some impressive dams and you may be able to spot them at work.

Longmarsh Preserve is surrounded by other conserved lands, ensuring that the preserve stays in a protected and natural state.

The trails on this NH nature walk are easy and suitable for all abilities. Most importantly, they can provide some solitude in an otherwise busy part of the state. For more information and to download a trail map, visit the Town of Durham website.

To make a longer trip out of this hike, you can also continue south along the Sweet Trail, which ends at a scenic viewpoint at Great Bay. Make sure you are well-prepared for the trek and enjoy the walk!
