The Little Known Hiking Path in White Mountain National Forest Is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year
Stroll on a snowy path and past frozen waterfalls on this little-known hike in New Hampshire that's fun for the whole family.
Hiking has become one of my favorite ways to destress. The crisp air and nature’s soundtrack allow me to focus on and savor the moment, so it’s only natural that one of my first outdoor adventures of the year is heading out on a scenic trail. If you’re craving quiet time in the forest, you’ll likely fall head over heels for this little-known hiking path in New Hampshire. It promises an abundance of natural beauty, from tumbling waterfalls to unique rock formations, making it an ideal choice for the first hike of the year.
A hike through the forest, particularly on a snowy winter day, won’t come without its challenges, and the Basin Cascade Trail in White Mountain National Forest near Lincoln, New Hampshire, is proof of that. Although it’s relatively short and drenched in natural beauty, the nearly 2.5-mile out-and-back trail can be a bit tricky due to rocky terrain and, if snow’s not blanketing the ground, muddy conditions. Your best bet is to wear sturdy hiking boots; spikes are recommended by those who have hiked the trail in the winter. You might even want to bring hiking poles. Despite those obstacles, the scenic hiking path is considered kid-friendly; leashed pups are welcome, and a short part of the trail is usable for those in wheelchairs and those with strollers.
If you’ve never hiked this pretty path before, enter “Basin Cascade Trailhead” into your GPS. That should bring to you a paved parking lot with ample space, including three accessible spots. From the parking lot, follow the Franconia Notch Bike Path until you arrive at two signs – one says The Basin, and the other has an arrow pointing to the Basin Cascade Trail. While hiking is the most popular way to explore, you might also want to snowshoe instead if the conditions are right.
The highlight of the trail is, inarguably, the largest basin in White Mountain National Forest, which doubles as a popular swimming hole in the summer. During the winter, though, it’s a quiet spot, perfect for snapping photos and taking a moment to admire the scenery. A dusting of snow adds a magical aura to the trail that’s dotted with waterfalls, some of which might be frozen in mid-tumble, trees shimmering with icy branches, and streams flowing over rocks.
Additionally, White Mountain National Forest offers something for everyone, regardless of the season. During the warmer months, adventurers can enjoy an extensive network of hiking trails, ranging from beginner-friendly paths to steep and challenging routes with great views. The forest is also home to diverse wildlife, including moose, black bears, and countless bird species. For those visiting in the fall, the forest transforms into a palette of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows as the foliage reaches its peak. Winter brings opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
While the trail may be little known to visitors, it is popular with locals, so be prepared for congestion, especially on good weather days.
