Some would say that New Hampshire has some of the most spectacular natural scenery anywhere, and in many respects, I would agree! Sure, there are great natural wonders all over the world, but to have this in our backyard is pretty great. We are also fortunate to have one of the wildest and most ecologically-diverse mountain ranges in the world here and along with the numerous other New Hampshire landscapes, the Presidential Range ranks as the most impressive.
New Hampshire's Presidential Range has been revered for centuries for its wild beauty, formidable weather, and challenges to mountaineers from around the world.
The long, curving ridge of the Presidential Range is home to some of the tallest mountains in the northeastern United States.
Due to its prominence, the range can be seen from many different perspectives from several New England states.
No peak in the Presidentials is more renowned than Mt. Washington, its highest summit. Explorer Darby Field is credited with the first documented ascent of the mountain in 1642.
While the Presidential Range displays stunning beauty, it is also home to some of the deadliest weather in the world.
Due to its unpredictable and inclement weather, the range is often used by climbers and mountaineers to train for some of the world's highest peaks, including K2 and Everest.
The summits in the range are principally named after U.S. presidents, but also include other notable figures in New Hampshire history.
Today, the Presidential Range remains a source of inspiration not only for hikers but also painters, photographers, and writers.
Scenic New Hampshire landscapes abound not only in the mountains but just about everywhere you look. Here are seven scenic drives you can take to explore the beautiful corners of the state, or if you prefer to venture out on foot, get outdoors for these 10 short but scenic hikes. Maybe even combine them into a great vacation idea.
