What's better than hiking to a waterfall in the forest? Hiking to a waterfall in the forest that's a bit off the beaten path. These are the locations I love to visit personally, as they are away from the major highways and more popular areas, and take some more research to find. After all, exploration and seeing new things is a big part of hiking! Here's a short and easy New Hampshire waterfall hike that you can do if you are looking for a more tranquil experience — a visit to Great Falls in Sandwich.
The hike to Great Falls begins at a U.S. Forest Service gate at the unmaintained end of Bennett St. in the town of Sandwich. There is parking here for several vehicles.
The route first follows Flat Mountain Pond Trail along an old forest road for a half mile, then turns right onto Bennett Street Trail.
The walk to and from Great Falls includes picturesque vignettes of Pond Brook as it flows down from the mountains.
At about one mile from the trailhead, Great Falls is reached. This tiny but beautiful cascade cuts through a miniature gorge into an attractive pool.
Great Falls is nestled into an area surrounded by ledges and boulders. Its pool makes for a refreshing spot to cool off during the height of summer's heat.
This is an easygoing trip at generally gentle grades. This is still part of the White Mountains though, so hikers should be properly prepared for a day hike.
A visit to Great Falls is one New Hampshire waterfall hike that is lesser-traveled and that makes it perfect for hikers seeking solitude. For more information, visit the U.S. Forest Service and consult the AMC White Mountain Guide. As a supplemental method to guidebooks and maps, the All Trails app will also get you to the falls.
If you want to get even further away from it all, take a drive way up to the top of the state and seek out Garfield Falls in Pittsburg.
