Most people take a train ride to get from one place to another. Typically, they’re utilitarian. Jump on the train, pay your fare, get to your destination, move along. But there’s one very special ride here in New Hampshire that’s a little bit different! Head to the top of 6,288-foot Mount Washington on this unique train ride, which is, without a doubt, one of the best scenic train rides in the country. You'll love this cog railway in New Hampshire.
The Cog Railway might just be one of the most special train rides in New England. In operation from April to November, the three-hour route takes visitors to the summit of the region’s tallest peak and then back down to the start.
But, this isn’t just a train ride for transportation purposes! The route passes three miles of the western side of Mount Washington, which means some of the best views you can have of the entire presidential range.
While the ride is beautiful it also feels a bit harrowing. This climb is steep! In fact, with an average grade of about 25% and a maximum grade of 37%, the Cog Railway track is the second steepest in the world
The Cog Railway also operates a variety of different engines, including authentic coal-fired steam engines to biodiesel.
The railway got its start in1869, making it the oldest of its type in the world. But don’t worry! There have been lots of renovations since that first trip. Today it’s quite safe and uses the latest technology to make its journeys.
Once visitors reach the summit, there’s an hour of free time to explore the area and see the museum.
Be sure to take a good look at the Presidential Range while you’re there. And, on a clear day you can see all the way to the Atlantic Ocean and North to Canada.
On the way down the view adds a bit of a thrill since it feels as if the train might completely disappear!
But, you’ll be fine. Just enjoy the ride and then make plans to visit again.
You'll love your ride on the historic Mount Washington Cog Railway! It's sure to be a trip that you and your companions will never forget. This is a hidden gem in New Hampshire that is worth the trip.
