Mountain Pond In Chatham, New Hampshire Is So Little-Known, You Just Might Have It All To Yourself
Explore the secluded Mountain Pond in New Hampshire via a 2.7-mile loop trail for a peaceful and rugged hiking experience.
Nestled in the valleys and lowlands between New Hampshire's iconic mountains, many lakes and small ponds can be found. Some of these are inaccessible and therefore remain largely unvisited by humans. Others can be reached by trail. So lace up the hiking boots because we are going to take a remote hike in New Hampshire and I promise that you won't be disappointed.
Mountain Pond is a large body of water located in the valley of Slippery Brook in the town of Chatham.
A 2.7-mile loop trail leads around the pond. While flat, the trail is fairly rugged in places due to rocky footing.
The walk from the trailhead to the start of the loop junction is through a beautiful forest that is typical of this region.
Three peaks overlook the pond; South Baldface, Walter Mountain, and Doublehead Mountain, all of which can be seen from the trail.
A first-come, first-served shelter at the pond is a good spot for an overnight stay. Come during the week and it will likely be all yours.
Mountain Pond's secluded location offers peace and tranquility amongst the sounds of nature.
While walking the trail around the pond, also remember to look down once in a while to see the beauty at your feet.
I often do a remote hike in New Hampshire when I want to get away from the busier trailheads, and Mountain Pond is on my list of go-to destinations. For more information, visit the U.S. Forest Service website and also consult the AMC White Mountain Guide.
