Can’t Make It to Flathead Lake? Try This Lesser-Known Montana Alternative
Enjoy quiet and beauty just a short drive from Flathead Lake. This is a hidden gem in northern Montana.
Flathead Lake is easily one of the most popular lakes in Montana. It is not only gorgeous, but it is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western U.S., and an outdoor lover's paradise, perfect for boating, fishing, swimming, and camping along its shores. For many reasons, Flathead Lake can become quite busy—almost too busy. If you are like me and want your time outdoors filled with the sounds of nature rather than the shrieks and squeals of other people, Echo Lake is a terrific alternative.
Echo Lake is located in Bigfork, just a few miles from Flathead Lake. It is much smaller and less well-known than Flathead Lake, making it easy to enjoy a quiet, peaceful day outdoors and on the water.
Echo Lake is approximately 2 miles long and is 80 feet deep. It is one of the warmest lakes in the Flathead Valley as it's filled with groundwater and runoff from Echo Creek. It is extremely scenic as it sits near the Swan Mountain Range and is surrounded by forests, providing a truly picturesque setting from almost every angle.
Like Flathead Lake, Echo Lake is the perfect place for a day on the water. This body of water is ideal for swimming and boating. Also, because the lake isn't as large as the nearby Flathead Lake, I find it is a great paddling destination for families. Kayaks, paddleboards, canoes—there are many options for some time out on the water. And if you love fishing, this is an excellent lake for fly and spin fishing. Try your luck to catch everything from bass to various trout species.
Echo Lake is a great place to catch a sunrise or a sunset, but you don't have to spend all of your time on the water. Echo Lake is near Jewel Basin Hiking Area, which is an inspiring 15,000-acre hiking-only area at the northern end of the Swan Mountain Range. Jewel Basin is particularly enticing to backpackers as there are more than 20 lakes you can visit and explore. However, this is an area home to all types of wildlife and a fragile ecosystem, so it is important to visit the U.S. Forest Service website for the area's most current rules and regulations before visiting.
You may also want to visit Lone Pine State Park, which is just outside of Kalispell, if you wish to hike. This beautiful state park boasts miles of hiking trails, as well as biking and horseback riding trails. This state park also offers gorgeous overlooks and scenic views, and it has plenty of history. Lone Pine is the second oldest state park in Montana, dating back to 1941.
Yes, Flathead Lake is worthy of a visit—there's so much to love here. But, if you don't want the crowds, nearby Echo Lake is a great alternative. Paddle, fish, swim, picnic—it's the perfect place to spend some time outdoors. And if you are looking for a remote campground in Montana for a night under the stars, check out Tally Lake Campground. It's one destination where you can get away from it.
