Hiking may be a quintessential Montana pastime, but that doesn't mean every Montanan is cut out for primitive trails. The good news is, you don't have to go deep into the forest on a rugged path to take in the kind of scenic views you can only find on a hike. Walk Glacier National Park's Trail of the Cedars for a pleasant boardwalk-filled adventure you'll love.

The Trail of the Cedars is a nice and easy mile-long loop that begins and ends on the Going-To-The-Sun Road.
It's located about five miles east of the Lake McDonald Lodge.
This is one of the only trails in Glacier National Park that's wheelchair accessible due to its boardwalks and wide paths.
It's also a perfect trail for beginning hikers and young families.
At the halfway point of the hike, you'll reach a footbridge over Avalanche Creek that offers spectacular views of the lower Avalanche Gorge.
You'll also notice the lush green of ferns and mosses growing along the forest floor, the result of the unique climate in the area.
The Trail of the Cedars may be short, but it's extremely visually stunning.
You may even decide to walk it twice.
Some of the trees around this trail are estimated to be over 500 years old.
This area also marks the eastern limits for western hemlocks and red cedars of this nature.
Avalanche Creek will provide peaceful sounds as you walk the path.
Admittedly, this is a popular place for Glacier National Park visitors, but the rushing creek will drown out the other hikers and make you feel like you're completely alone.
The Trail of the Cedars stays popular from late spring until mid-autumn, so go early in the day if you want to avoid the crowds.
The visual rewards will be well worth it.
