Hike Bryant Creek State Park’s Newest Trail in Missouri for an Unforgettable Adventure

New trails at a popular Missouri State Park offer hikers loads of scenic beauty and adventure!

Looking for the perfect day hike in Missouri? Head south to Ava, Missouri, where you’ll encounter nearly two miles of frontage along the scenic Bryant Creek. This park is in a remote location, which means the creek is pristine, offering hikers the chance to experience abundant flora and fauna.

Bryant Creek State Park features two main trails, making navigation straightforward as you pass through unique sandstone outcrops and untouched forests. Covering over 2,900 acres, this park promises an unforgettable adventure.

Nestled in the rolling hills of the southern Missouri Ozarks, Bryant Creek State Park offers a tranquil escape into nature. Opened in 2022, Pike Hollow Trail covers 4.9 miles. This is the “main” trail in the park, and the hike takes about two hours. It’s considered challenging due to the rugged terrain and hilly landscape. For breathtaking views of Bryant Creek, a tributary of the North Fork River, head south at the trailhead to quickly find yourself following the creek for 1.67 miles. The creek is a haven for wildlife, so if you’re lucky, you may spot a river otter or a great blue heron along the water’s edge.

Pinewoods Trail is the “easy” trail in the park (I prefer the term leisurely...). It will only take you about 30 minutes to cover the 1.4 miles, which partly overlaps the Pike Hollow trail. You’ll be led along a ridge top trail, the perfect way to see the only species of native pine in Missouri - Shortleaf Pine. There are also towering oak and hickory trees, offering shade and tranquility.

In the 19th century, homesteaders forested the landscape in many areas of the state where these trees thrive. Not so at Bryant Creek State Park due to the terrain, making logging difficult. Long before homesteaders arrived, American Indian tribes like the Osage used game trails along the creek to navigate through the Ozarks. The woods are home to bobcats, black bears, and bats, but you’re unlikely to encounter them - keep an eye out for paw prints, also known as spoor.

Beyond the lush forest and wildlife, the park is a geological wonder. As you hike, you’ll notice dolomite ledges. Weathered by time and water, these rocks offer a dramatic contrast to the lush surroundings. Small waterfalls cascade over the rocky ledges into pools below, especially after a good rain. Sandstone outcroppings, remnants of ancient sea beds that once covered the Ozarks millions of years ago, dot the forest floor. Look out for growth on the rocks like mosses, hornworts, and liverworts; there are 60+ different kinds in the park! These low growers often keep color year-round, making this a great spot to hike in winter when everything seems in a state of decay.

Are you a plant person? The park is home to nearly 950 types of plants nestled in diverse ecosystems. Visit in spring and summer to see vibrant wildflowers. If you do wander to explore the abundant plant species, I highly recommend using an app like AllTrails+ so you can feel confident about where you’re in the park.
