A beautiful day in Missouri is often best spent outdoors, maybe on one of its many trails. Deciding which trail to follow, however, can be a bit challenging, especially with all of the scenic treks in all corners of the state. Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park in Missouri is an idyllic backdrop for a day of exploring – from hiking its picturesque trails to cooling off in the shut-ins during the hottest days of summer.

You'll find plenty to do at all of Missouri state parks, including Castlewood State Park and Bennett Spring State Park, but there's something special about Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park - namely, the natural shut-ins.
Both offer sensational views of the shut-ins, although the Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park Trail earns a moderate rating from All Trails. The Scour Trail scores an easy rating.
Follow both trails, or just do one, depending on how much time you have and your skill level. Hikers recommend carving out a bit over an hour for each trail.
Clocking in at just under 2.5 miles, the first trail will take you directly to the breathtaking shut-ins. The first .30-mile of the trail is wheelchair-accessible and well worth the visit.
Unfortunately, if you like hiking with your pup, he'll have to sit this one out. Dogs are not allowed on the trail. Good news, though, as pups are permitted in the Missouri state park itself.
However, after that, be prepared for a decent workout. The trail features some steep climbs and rocky terrain. It can also be quite slippery after rain and in the fall when the leaves scatter across the ground.
This scenic trail in Missouri meanders through forested area, too, so you'll definitely want to wear sturdy shoes. Make sure you bring plenty of water, too.
If you’re up for the challenge, you’ll be treated to beautiful views of the shut-ins and the surrounding landscape. For an easier journey, hikers recommend doing the trail counterclockwise.
Bring your swimming gear along if you’re visiting in the hotter months, so you can cool off in the shut-ins. This Missouri trail is simply spellbinding in all seasons, so make it a point to visit in each.
Follow up your trek with an easy journey along the Scour Trail. Be sure to wear water shoes or shoes you don’t mind getting wet as you will have a few water crossings.
Hikers also recommend doing the trail counterclockwise. Unlike the Shut-Ins Trail, pups are welcome along this picturesque path. However, make sure you keep your dog on a leash.
The trail leads through forested area. Part of the trail can be impassable after a particularly heavy rainfall.
Some hikers have complained about the trail being overgrown but overall agree that it's an easy trek that promises spectacular views. You definitely don't want to forget your camera on this pair of trails.
