The Can’t-Miss Missouri Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List
Hike this bucket list scenic Missouri trail for nature lovers: Valley View Glades Trail in Jefferson County, near Hillsboro.
Imagine stepping out of your car, the cool breeze of central Missouri brushing past you as you approach the trailhead. Just a few paces from the parking lot, you’re greeted by an unexpected view that seems to stretch on forever: an open glade teeming with wildflowers in spring and a breathtaking frost-covered scene in winter. Welcome to Valley View Glades Natural Area, one of Missouri’s hidden gems, where the landscape tells a story of a time long past.
First, let's talk about what a glade is. A glade refers to an open, rocky area within a forest, typically found on south or west-facing slopes. These environments are characterized by shallow soils, exposed bedrock (often dolomite or limestone), and unique vegetation adapted to dry, sunny conditions. Glades are often referred to as "desert-like islands" in a forest, supporting rare plants, grasses, and wildlife such as lizards and pollinators. Missouri glades are ecologically significant, providing habitats for species that thrive in harsh, sunny environments while offering scenic beauty for hikers and naturalists.
The 2.5-mile Valley View Glades Trail is in central Jefferson County [about an hour south of St. Louis]. This 225-acre dolomite glade is a unique treasure, home to rare plant species like the Fremont’s leather flower (which only lives in this part of Missouri) and a variety of wildlife that call the area home. As you trek through the winding trails, you’ll find yourself navigating a mix of woodlands, rocky outcrops, babbling streams, and mini waterfalls. Each step reveals more of this diverse landscape. It’s as though the glade’s history unfolds before you, offering a glimpse into what the land looked like before human hands left their mark.
The magic of this area isn’t just in its striking beauty but in its rarity. Valley View Glades remains one of the least disturbed examples of dry upland forests and glades of its kind in Missouri, where little bluestem and Indian grass grow among the hills, and streams carve out their path through the landscape. This is where the natural world thrives; snakes, lizards, and deer roam freely, and the quiet stillness is only interrupted by the occasional rustling of leaves or the call of a distant turkey. I had a hard time finding a specific address for this Natural Area, so I wanted to provide you with directions. From the intersection of Highway 21 and Highway B in Hillsboro, travel west on Highway B for 4.5 miles to the parking lot on the right (north) side of the road.
