It goes without saying that hiking is a fun and an easy way to explore some of the best that our beautiful state has to offer. If you're up for a unique adventure, climb this stone staircase that leads to sweeping views from a one-of-a-kind Missouri overlook.
Washington State Park in DeSoto beckons adventure lovers with its many outdoor activities - boating, swimming, fishing, and wildlife watching.
It's also home to three picturesque hiking trails, including the 1.5-mile 1000 Steps Trail that meanders along a path dotted with colorful wildflowers.
However, that easy winding path belies the challenge that awaits on this moderate-rated trail.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, because you'll be climbing a series of stone stairs. In the summertime, the trees that line the path provide much-needed shade.
Hikers recommend bringing a stick, since you'll likely run into a lot of spider webs.
You'll deal with a variety of terrain, in fact, that ranges from overgrowth to roots and rocks jutting up from the ground. Missouri State Parks recommends alloting at least an hour and 15 minutes for the hike.
When you reach the top of the hill, you'll arrive at a stone overlook shelter. It's perfect for taking a breather, having a drink, and admiring the views.
No matter what time of the year you visit, you'll be treated to sweeping views of the Big River Valley.
The trail, especially the stairs, can get slippery and even muddy at times, something to keep in mind if you're hiking after a rainfall and during the winter.
Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail. You'll probably want to make sure your dog is up for climbing 1,000 stairs, though.
