This Mississippi Hike Is 100% Worth Braving the Cold
The Vicksburg Military Park North Loop Trail is a 3.5-mile hike past stunning historic monuments.
With the right gear, winter hiking in Mississippi can be delightful and (dare I say) even better than hiking during warmer months of the year. The bare trees provide clear sightlines of natural landscapes. There are often fewer bugs, and the trails are quiet and peaceful. The right clothing items make all the difference for a comfortable winter hiking experience. I always remember to wear thick socks and quality earmuffs to stay warm. The Vicksburg Military Park North Loop is a wonderful winter hike near Vicksburg, Mississippi.
The Vicksburg Military Park North Loop is a 3.5-mile loop trail starting near the park's visitor center. There are parking areas nearby. On the trail, hikers enjoy passing many beautiful historic monuments. The Vicksburg National Military Park commemorates the Vicksburg Campaign, a pivotal Civil War battle, and has more than 1,400 monuments dedicated to its veterans. The Illinois Memorial is the park's largest monument, designed after the Pantheon in Rome. The 76-foot-tall Mississippi Memorial, dedicated in 1909, features Clio, the Greek and Roman goddess of history. The trail passes a Memorial Arch, Minnesota Memorial, Michigan Memorial, and Louisiana Memorial. Doesn't it sound lovely to hike among such beautiful monuments?
The trail is great for hiking, biking, and running and includes challenging hills. Along the path, there are benches and places to rest. The walkway is several feet wide in many places but is shared with motor vehicles, and hikers should take appropriate safety precautions. The trail is open year-round, and leashed dogs are welcome. Don't forget to bring a pair of warm earmuffs for the best cold-weather hiking experience.
