Its short distance is another. (It’s not even a ½ mile long!) Between the scenic setting and lack of miles, it’s perfect for a quick, yet unforgettable adventure.

A can’t-miss stop on the Natchez Trace Parkway, the Cypress Swamp Loop Trail is located at milepost 122 in Canton.

Giving visitors the unique opportunity to explore a swamp and its inhabitants, the 0.4-mile boardwalk trail leads straight through a cypress swamp.

The swamp is home to dozens of tupelo and bald cypress trees – both of which thrive in watery bogs.

Informative signage marks the beginning of the trail. From the sign, you’ll descend a few stairs to the boardwalk.

Running right over the swamp’s surface, the boardwalk offers exceptional views of the trees and one of their most notable features – their roots, which are known as “knees.”

The knees protrude from the surface of the water, making them easy to spot. Wildlife is another common sight along the trail. Keep your eyes peeled for frogs, turtles, snakes, and alligators.

Smaller signs, which contain info on the surroundings, are scattered along the trail and are a great addition to the scenic trek.

Providing a front-row seat to the natural beauty of the swamp and its wildlife, the Cypress Swamp Loop Trail is a short trek that goes the distance!
