Every Michigander is familiar with Tahquamenon Falls, and with good reason. These gorgeous falls offer some of the most stunning natural views in the entire Great Lakes State. But our state is overflowing with plenty of other breathtaking waterfalls near me, some of which you might not have heard of. Listed below are nine lesser-known waterfalls to explore throughout Michigan.

1. Sable Falls

Located on Sable Creek near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Sable Falls is an absolute must-visit for adventurous Michiganders. You can access the falls off of H-58, situated west of the town of Grand Marais. The hike to the falls themselves is short and sweet, and the views are absolutely breathtaking.

2. Wagner Falls

Lush forestry surrounds this gorgeous waterfall, which sits in Alger County within a 23-acre scenic area. The walk to the falls from the parking lot is quick and convenient, so you can make a brief and easy pit stop during your travels through the Upper Peninsula.

3. Hungarian Falls

Venture to Houghton County to explore this beautiful site, which includes several drops and a historic dam nearby. The falls tumble down a sandstone gorge, making for some of the prettiest scenery imaginable — no matter when you choose to visit.

4. Alger Falls

Believe it or not, you can actually view Alger Falls from the highway. Located along M-28 near Munising, Alger Falls makes for a great family destination during your journey through the beautiful U.P. With a 15-foot height and multiple drops throughout, you’ll be mesmerized by these lovely falls.

5. Manganese Falls

If you’re looking to get off the beaten path, make a stop at Manganese Falls in Copper Harbor. You’ll only want to venture close to these falls if you’re confident in your athletic abilities, as the hike to the bottom can be slippery and treacherous. That said, the views you’ll catch here are nothing short of amazing — if you can make the journey.

6. Jacob's Falls

These roadside falls in Eagle River can be reached via a short two-minute walk from the parking area, so you won’t need much time to explore and appreciate the falls. Be sure to bring your camera because these gorgeous falls are small but mighty, and you’ll want to remember your visit.

7. Spray Falls

Most visitors opt for a tour boat or kayak to catch the most brilliant views of these falls, which cascade from a cliffside into Lake Superior. For another angle, take the Lakeshore Trail within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which requires at least a mile of hiking. No matter where you view Spray Falls from, you’ll be amazed.

8. Dead River Falls

Tucked away two miles west of Marquette on the Dead River, these falls have a little bit of everything: multiple plunging drops, unique rock formations, and scenic forested beauty to supplement the falls’ awesome atmosphere. While the walk toward the falls from the parking area is less than a mile long, its terrain is rather rugged, so be sure to lace up your hiking boots.

9. Horseshoe Falls

Munising and its surrounding areas are simply overflowing with beautiful waterfalls, and Horseshoe Falls is no exception. A small entrance fee is required to see this magical locale, but it’s well worth the cost. You’ll find informational markers, a scavenger hunt activity for kids, and plenty of natural wonder.
