The Most Romantic Valentine’s Day Hike You’ll Find in Massachusetts

Meander through the forest, over a covered bridge, and past tiny waterfalls on this romantic hike in Massachusetts, perfect for a Valentine's adventure.

Winter often becomes monotonous, especially after the rush during the holiday season, as life settles into the quieter months before the busyness of spring. That’s why so many of us look forward to Valentine’s Day, a day dedicated to love and friendship that breaks the monotony of a long winter. Dinner and a movie are the usual go-to for many, but sometimes we feel like bucking tradition. Even if dinner’s still on the menu, spend part of your Valentine’s Day exploring the wintery landscape on this romantic hike in Massachusetts.

Sometimes the most unforgettable moments happen in unexpected places, like deep in the forest on Valentine’s Day as you and your love stroll hand-in-hand along a brook, through a covered bridge, and past tiny cascades on the Willard Brook Trail in West Townsend. Set aside around an hour to follow this 2.4-mile out-and-back trail that wanders through Willard Brook State Forest, a magnificent family-friendly (leashed dogs included) destination on Valentine’s Day or any time of the year.

While the Willard Brook Trail is undeniably romantic, it’s also perfect if you’re looking for a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the kiddos. The easy trail features an incline of 219 feet, so prepare for a few steep climbs. As with any hike, good hiking boots are recommended. Waterproof shoes are ideal as the trail is sometimes muddy and wet. Spikes and trekking poles can help on cold, icy days.

Chances are pretty good you’ll cross paths with other hikers as the trail is incredibly popular. Some noise from the nearby road may filter in, too. But even on a busy day, you should easily have quiet moments alone. If you’re hiking after a fresh snowfall, your footprints may be the first in the pristine blanket as you meander past trees and snow-covered rocks. Listen for the sound of gently cascading water from the tiny waterfalls, some frozen in mid-tumble, in the brook.

Perhaps the most enchanting part of the trail, the covered bridge is particularly romantic with a dusting of snow. Walk through, stopping to take selfies and photos of the surrounding scenery, including the brook beneath that effortlessly flows over rocks.

Plan a return visit in the spring when the flowers have bloomed, and shades of green have returned to the landscape. No matter how many times you follow this pretty path, you’ll discover something new, from wild mushrooms popping out of the ground to mossy rocks tucked near clusters of trees. Replace the trekking poles and spikes of winter with an ample supply of insect repellant, as bugs can be a huge nuisance during the warmer months.
