The Breathtaking Small Town State Forest in Massachusetts That We Can’t Stop Thinking About
Hike, bike, or explore by horseback at this enchanting state forest in Massachusetts that offers a full menu of family-friendly activities.
Massachusetts is brimming with natural beauty that’s sometimes so enchanting we might feel as though we’ve stepped onto the pages of an old-fashioned fairy tale. Take this small town state forest in Massachusetts as an example. Moss-covered rocks sit next to a gentle brook; a yurt is framed by giant trees; tiny waterfalls tumble into crystal-clear pools of water, and the scenery grows more beautiful with every step. Next time the urge to spend time outdoors and reconnect with nature strikes, plan a day at this state forest in Massachusetts.
Willard Brook State Forest is the kind of place we go when we want to get away from it all, to soak up all the beauty (and fresh air) that nature has to offer. Sprawled across more than 2,500 acres, the enchanting state forest offers a full menu of family-friendly, including your leashed pup, activities. Summertime is all about lazy days lounging at one of the two beaches (only one allows swimming), and snowy winter days mean snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
Horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking are the most popular ways to explore any time of the year, though. The more than half-dozen trails range in difficulty from easy to moderate. If you’re up for an easy journey, follow the .02-mile Trap Falls Trail. The short and sweet trail takes less than 10 minutes and leads to Trap Falls, a tiny but breathtaking cascade.
For more of a challenge, head out on the 9.2-mile Brook, Friends, Orange, and Yellow Trail, a moderate path that you’ll need around four hours to complete. Travel through the forest, over a covered footbridge, and past waterfalls, wildflower bushes, mushroom patches, and green fields. Watch out for wildlife, too, including salamanders scurrying across the path.
You’ll likely find so much to do at this state forest in Massachusetts that a day isn’t quite enough time. With more than 20 camping sites, including one yurt, the seasonal campground offers a fun and easy way to get away. The campground is open from the end of May until the beginning of September.
