We think waterfalls in Maine are the best in the country! But, with so many Waterfalls in Maine to choose from, which is the best here? The answer is: that we have no answer. How could we possibly tell you which is the best when they're all so perfect? But, we CAN tell you which one feels like a little bit of heaven. We're sure you all have your own favorite waterfall trip, but this one is ours right now: Houston Brook Falls.
Houston Brook Fall is located in Pleasant Ridge, within Somerset County.
The waterfall is basically way out in the middle of nowhere and if you blink you will miss it. There is a small parking area and a sign pointing you to the forest to explore. What is waiting inside however is one of the waterfalls in Maine.
Getting to the waterfall means a short 10-minute hike through the woods.
If you were looking for easy waterfall hikes in Maine then this is one you will want to come and visit.
Just a short half-mile hike for an out-and-back trail leading to a waterfall like this is a dream come true. As much as we loved the waterfall there is something special about the forest leading to the water as well. The high old trees tower above and the soft mossy soil is ripe with lush green plants.
The trail passes through the woods and moves along a lovely rocky stream.
Part of the walk will take you over a small bridge which is a fun little addition to this short trail to the Houston Brook Waterfall.
Remember to look up, but also be careful - there are lots of exposed roots and you don't want to trip before you get to the falls!
After a lovely walk through the woods, you'll arrive at this destination!
The falls are simply gorgeous! We have been to alot of different waterfalls before and this one ranks up there with some of the best.
Climb to the top of the falls to see the brook that eventually becomes the rushing waters.
Then, make your way down carefully (it's slippery!) to enjoy a picnic and swimming.
The area is wonderful for a full day. Make sure to pack a swimsuit, sunscreen, and snacks. The walk back is just as simple as the way in - a nice, easy out-and-back route.
Head to the Wyman Lake recreation area to take this trip. The trail is about a mile past the Wyman Lake area on the right.
It's only marked by a small sign, but it's a fairly easy-to-follow path. And, you'll be able to hear the waterfall as you walk which is helpful and will probably make you move just a little bit faster.
When we visited this hidden gem spot in Maine it was late spring. The weather was warm that day but deeper in the woods there was still a little bit of ice still on the ground and near the waterfall.
The forest was a beautiful reprieve from our long drive to get there because Houston Brook Falls is located far down rural roads. When we first arrived at the falls we were awestruck by the size and volume of water that was gushing down. We explored around the falls a little bit but my favorite part was climbing down to the base of the falls.
Once at the bottom of the falls, we were able to witness the sheer power of Houston Brook Falls. The flowing water created a cooling mist and wind that rushed through the rocky area. This is a waterfall I would highly recommend for anyone looking to be blown away by a Maine waterfall.
The power, accessibility, and beauty make Houston Brook Falls one of the best waterfalls in Maine. Have you ever been to this incredible spot? Let us know in the comments what you think of it. Also, a helpful tool we always use while hiking is the AllTrails+ app make sure you check it out and take it with you on your next hiking trip. Make sure you download the map of Houston Brook Falls because there is little to no cell service in the area.
